The Wagga GP After Hours Service (WGPAHS) has been operating in Wagga Wagga since March 2003 and has become a vital component of the cities health services. As a collaborative of the cities General Practices the service operates outside normal surgery hours to provide urgent Genera Practice after hours care to patients who would otherwise have to attend the base hospital emergency department.
Since opening in 2003 the service has seen more than 30,000 patients at the after hours clinic and General Practitioners have made over 1200 home visits. The service is not only available to residents of Wagga Wagga and surrounding communities but also services the large number of tourists and visitors to the city.
The WGPAHS was established in response to community demand as residents were waiting many hours at the Wagga Base Hospital Emergency Department to be seen and receive treatment for conditions that could be treated in an after hours GP clinic. It is a vital service especially for parents of young children with approximately 25% of patient being children under the age of 10 years.
Feedback about the service has been overwhelmingly positive with one young mother stating, ‘Thank you for providing such a service on weekends, it is very handy for mothers with young ones.’ Other comments received include ‘You guys are doing a wonderful job, keep it up’, ‘Excellent service, love the relaxed friendly atmosphere’ and ‘Please keep this service going, it is invaluable! Without fail my children get sick on weekends.’
The service operates 365 day per year with the clinic open for two, four hour sessions Sunday’s and public holidays and one session in the evening every other day. A General Practitioner is also oncall to carry out home visits for urgent medical treatment. The clinic is located at “Piercy Place”, 185 Morgan Street, Wagga Wagga.
