RDGP Home Programs Quality Use of Medicines (HMR/NPS) National Prescribing Service - NPS
PDF Print E-mail

The National Prescribing Service (NPS) for which David Kennedy is the facilitator, provides education and resources to GPs on a one on one basis with academic visits to the surgeries. The NPS has also enlarged to now provide information to pharmacists and also the public, who can have direct access through “Medicines Line” a special “1300” number, manned by specially trained clinical pharmacists.

The NPS is a non-profit organisation independent of government and pharmaceutical industry. The program aims to deliver key NPS messages about drugs and disease topics such as hypertension, asthma, diabetes, analgesics and pain, antibiotics, dyslipidaemia etc. The information contained in these messages is independent, unbiased and balanced, and has been critically appraised; thereby giving prescribers the support they need to make appropriate prescribing decisions. Small group case studies are also held at group meetings.
