A practice-led eye screening program for preschool aged children

About the program ( Factsheet)

The Caring 4 Eyesight program aims to pilot, implement and evaluate a GP practice-led eye screening program for preschool aged children. The program is funded from June 2008 to May 2010. One in four children has a vision problem, and two thirds of these problems go undetected. If they are not detected and treated early, vision problems in children can lead to a variety of long-term consequences. Diagnosing a vision problem early can help to protect remaining sight and allow for the best possible vision-loss education and opportunities for children.

Vision screening aims to detect what a child can see in both their right and left eye. Up-skilling General Practitioners and General Practice Nurses to undertake basic visual acuity screening will aid early identification and subsequent management of any problems. The identification of referral pathways, systems and arrangements that facilitate the engagements of GPs and primary care practitioners in eye care are also a priority for this program.
