Aged Care Access Initiative (ACAI)

Improving access to allied health services for residents in low care residential aged care facilities


About the Program ( Factsheet)

The Aged Care Access Initiative (ACAI) aims to improve access to primary care for residents of aged care facilities (RACFs)

The ACAI has 2 separate components:
  1. General Practice Incentive - a two-level payment from medicare through the PIP to encourage General Practitioners to increase the number of visits provided to their patients who are residents in Residential Aged Care Facilities.
  2. Allied Health Services - payment to allied health professionals for the provision of clinical care to low care residents in Residential Aged Care Facilities.
The Riverina Division of General Practice and Primary Health oversees the management of allied health initiatives in Residential Aged Care Facilities. Examples of both individual and group initiatives that have successfully been implemented include:
  • Gentle exercise (Heartmoves) classes facilitated by physiotherapists and Certificate III fitness leaders.
  • Dietetic services - provided by Dietitians
  • Advance Care Plans
  • Dental Services - provided by Dentists and Oral Hygienists
